What We Do
Nurture
Most young people want to be a part of something, to be accepted, and if their own school or community doesn’t fill that need, they can withdraw or look for that belonging elsewhere. Online friends and gang culture can put vulnerable young people at risk and they may not have developed resilience or understanding of those dangers. Improved self-esteem, professional friendships with our mentors and tutors and a sense of achievement fulfils this need in a positive way.
Guide
Young people who are not at the same place as their age related expectations may have been let down by a rigid system. It is not the young person who has failed to learn, but the professionals around them who have failed to find the right way to teach them. We work with students, at their pace and around their own interests, in order to re-engage them with learning, living and looking forward to life again.
Achieve
We focus on the achievements and successes of our students. We acknowledge them, build on them and use them to enable our young people to achieve their goals. We have so many success stories where students have managed a transition to school, achieved a place at college, gained a job or apprenticeship in a role which they enjoy. This is success, beyond that which they dreamed achievable.
Grow
For some young people, leaving the safety of their own home and engaging in the community is the focus. Education can come later, or in a different way. In order to learn and progress, we first need to feel safe, accepted and enthused. Our tutors and mentors work with our young people to build a trusting relationship, so that they are able to consider venturing outside of their safe spaces, and join in with the world.
Empower
Differences such as Autism and ADHD and challenges such as Anxiety and low mood don’t have to be barriers to achieving our aspirations. With time, patience and guidance, we support and guide our students to manage those challenges and to benefit from the positives of their individual character and their own superpowers.
Develop
We understand the difficulties that our students face and deal with them practically and logically. We educate our young people to encourage safe, positive life decisions, based on information and self-belief. Social skills are not always learned instinctively. We help to break down and explore those skills in a way that is accessible and meaningful. This helps our young people to avoid the awkwardness and confusion associated with trying to fit in with fast changing peer groups and expectations placed upon them.
Listen
Many of the parents of our young people feel that they and their child have not been listened to. This could be related to diagnoses, difficulties, attendance, learning and behaviours. We take the time to listen to the parent before we start to work with any young person. We listen to the young person when starting to get to know them. We continue to listen to the young person and their family in order to make every session worthwhile and to achieve the best outcomes for that individual.
Liaise
Until you have a child with difficulties and challenges, you may not know about the systems, processes, terminology or funding related to support available. We take the information we have learned from listening, we work with schools, local authorities and all other professionals, and we advocate for the young person. We always strive to achieve the best possible outcomes for that individual, regardless of their age, diagnoses or previous educational experience.
Learn
We learn alongside our students. Whilst our staff are experienced and qualified, we are always learning new ways to encourage and engage young people. We are happy to allow them to teach us about their specific interests and give them the opportunity to share what inspires and excites them. We use this enthusiasm to build their confidence and their skills in other ways and give them the opportunity to show their knowledge and abilities.
